What is Aluminum Nitride?
Awarded for its outstanding thermal conductivity and electrical insulating qualities, aluminum nitride makes an excellent material to create semiconductors. In the field of light emitter technology, it can also be utilized as a heat sink.
Qualities of the Aluminum Nitride
Aluminum nitride is an organic compound of aluminum and nitrogen. It is part of the wurtzite crystal type and has a bandgap value of 6 eV at ambient temperature. This makes it suitable for use in the area of deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. It also functions by circuits semiconductors.
Aluminum Nitride, a very dense technical ceramic material , available in thin and thick versions. It is made using a carbothermal reduction process. But, this process could cost a lot of money, so the possibility of a less costly powder preparation method needs to be researched. Many sintering aids have been used to bring the mass of the material back to specifications.
Use of Aluminium Nitride
Aluminum Nitride can be used to make optical materials like nanotubes for chemical sensors. It can also be used as the substrate material for silicon processing. It is extremely resistant corrosion, oxidation and molten metals. It is stable at elevated temperatures under an inert atmosphere.
Aluminum nitride is found in almost all metals. It can be found in a gray-blue, white or gray powder. The powder is water-soluble and inorganic acids. But, it's unstable in a hydrogen atmosphere. It's also extremely flammable.
It is employed within mobile phones in order to form radio frequency filters. It is also used in medical imaging and robotics. These properties are utilized in bulk acoustic thin-film resonators.
It was reported that most of the current research is focused on development of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) made LEDs which operate in the ultraviolet where the wavelength of light is 250 nanometers. In May 2006, it was revealed that a diode that was inefficient could emit light at a wavelength of 210 nm. A single crystal of aluminum nitride includes an energy gap that is 6.2eV as measured by ultraviolet vacuum reflectance. Theoretically speaking, the energy gap lets certain waves that have dimensions of 200 nanometers to travel through. However, for it to be implemented commercially, many issues need to be solved. The aluminum nitride compound is employed in optoelectronic engineering, including Inductive layers on optical storage interfaces and electronic chip carrier substrates that have excellent thermal conductivity and military applications.
Extending epitaxially on AlN crystals can also be used in surface acoustic wave detectors due to the properties inherent to the AlN piezoelectric effect. The detectors are placed over the silicon wafer. Very few locations can reliably make these thin films.
Aluminum nitride has high resistance to temperature changes and high temperatures, a tiny expansion coefficient and excellent thermal conductivity. They can be utilized as heat exchanger materials for high-temperature structural parts.
Utilizing the corrosion resistance of iron, aluminum, as well as alloys made of other metals aluminum nitride clays can be used as crucibles as well as casting molds materials for smelting Al, Cu, Ag or Pb as well as other metals.
